Story:

This painting represents my grandmother’s historical story of travelling over country to collect her cousins. The blue sky and red dirt reflect the heat and sparseness of the Kimberley country in Western Australia. Despite this heat my grandmother travelled desperately to collect her cousins from a mission that was keeping them because they were not the right skin colour. The artist is saying that regardless of ‘skin colour’ these women no more than children themselves, felt and saw themselves like their own family as an Aboriginal person. That is why they are painted black. In sharing I want to tell my ancestor’s hard history and remember their steps for change in a time where they had no rights and were unequal to others. Within this picture the artist weaves the frangipanni flower and the cream dots at their feet to represent the artist’s Stone Dreaming of strength, spirituality and resilience.
